It is otherwise rich salmoncoloured below. This beautiful dove is highly terrestrial, foraging mostly on the ground, often in the shade of the forest.

The low shrubs are generally chenopods or saltbush (Chenopodium, Atriplex, and other genera), types of vegetation adapted to the saline soils that predominate. These plains get their name from a local term for the layer of small pebbles and cobbles that cover the ground. Over time, the exposed stones have been varnished with silica, giving them a shiny, smooth texture, and they form an almost impenetrable layer to the fine red sands below.
