The ideal entails that any doctrine held in a way that repudiates the burdens of judgement, for example, pushes the believer beyond the borders of reasonable pluralism.

Consider William Galston's argument for a political response to diversity that honours ‘simple’ rather than reasonable pluralism: ‘All too often the alternative to finding a way of living together—a modus vivendi—is cruel and bloody strife. Liberalism arises in large measure from the conviction that, regardless of the contending parties' truth claims, religious faith cannot justify such strife’ (Galston 1995: 519). As an objection to the political relevance of reasonable pluralism, I assume this has to be understood along the following lines.

How do we conceive the standards that govern public reason in a liberal democracy so as to include all sources of diversity (and only those sources of diversity) that deserve our respect?
