That hybridity is reflected in the languaging we’ve created. I’ve tried to reflect that in Midnight Robber, largely in the way the characters use language when they speak, but also in the language of the narrative. 2 By not only using an accent or Creole, by saying these words out loud is in her view “an act of referencing history and claiming space” (Hopkinson). This idiosyncratic linguistic code-sliding makes her works clearly not an easy reading, using alternatively a relatively standard English, French, Spanish or a deep Creole.
